NFL KickoffAre you ready for the 2018 NFL season to begin?

A month before the official season opener, football fans will officially declare summer is over -- as the NFL Hall of Fame Game takes place on Thursday, August 2, 2018 airing on NBC beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET live from the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

Following the Hall of Fame Game, look forward to more preseason football throughout the month of August, as FOX, NBC, CBS and ESPN add the first games of the unofficial season to their weekend TV and online streaming schedules.

The OFFICIAL start of the season is set to begin on Thursday, September 6, 2018 with the NFL Kickoff Game hosted by the defending Super Bowl LII champion Philadelphia Eagles vs the Atlanta Falcons starting at 8:30 PM ET on NBC.

'Paper Lion' in the preseason:

• Famous journalist George Plimpton was on assignment for Sports Illustrated when he sported #0 for the Detroit Lions during a preseason game in 1963. Although Plimpton badly wanted to enter the game, the move was banned at the last minute by NFL officials. He later wrote of his experiences in the bestseller, "Paper Lion".

• An NFL strike left the Denver Broncos with a team made up entirely of rookies in a preseason game with the New York Jets in 1974. Final score: New York Jets 41, Denver Broncos 19.

• The shortest NFL game ever recorded happened during the preseason between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Bears in 1996. The game lasted 40 minutes, 40 seconds, and was called on account of thunder and lightning.

• In 1999, the first Hall of Fame game to go into overtime was played by the new Cleveland Browns, who debuted at their first Hall of Fame game with a 20-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
