Taos Ski Valley Opens to Snowboarding

Most noted for its arid terrain, spectacular sunsets, and as a major tourist draw for UFO hunters in Roswell, New Mexico's more famous desert sands turn into fine white powder in the Northern Rockies — providing a full winter season from late November to mid April for world class skiing and snowboarding.

Urguably the state's most popular ski areas is the Angel Fire resort and hotel, a three-hour drive from Albuquerque, offering hundreds of acres of skiable areas and 6 lifts for family-friendly winter fun for skiiers of all abilities, along with a state of the art snowboard and ski school.

Less than 25 miles from Angel Fire also lies the expansive Red River Ski area with acres of varied ski and snowboad terrain for beginners to hotshots. And if cross-country is your thing, Red River area also offers XC adventure - in the aptly named Enchanged Forest - featuring miles of cross country and snowshoe trails.

However, ask international professional skiers their favorite New Mexico ski destination, and the immediate response is surely to be the legendary Taos Ski Valley, famous for over a thousand acres of skiable areas including steep chutes and advanced runs.

Skiing is serious business at Taos, reflected in the top-rated ski schools situated here with advanced training offered at extended stay race camps and mogul training sessions. More evidence of its ski-centric reputation lies in the fact that Taos allowed snowboarders to join in the action only in 2008.
