Jeff Gordon
Born
Jeffrey Michael Gordon on August 4, 1971 in Vallejo, California,
the legendary #24 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver has become a four-time
NASCAR
NEXTEL Cup racing champ and perhaps the most famous driver
in the sport of racing.
Before
the age of five, Gordon was already dreaming of NASCAR glory when
he and his family packed up for Indiana so that young Gordy could
compete in races specifically geared to under-age drivers.
Still
in his teens, Gordon racked up three short-track victories and
took the USAC Midget Car Racing Rookie of the Year title in 1989.
Two years later, at age 20, he became the youngest driver to win
the USAC Silver Crown title.
Gordon soon
realized his ultimate goal when he entered the NASCAR
Busch Series and set NASCAR record by qualifying for 11 pole
positions in one season. The following year, he took his first
Winston Cup win and in 1993 was recognized as Rookie of the Year.
The first
step toward the status of racing legend finally came in 1995 when
Gordon at age 24 won the first of four NASCAR Winston Cup Championships.
Only two other drivers claim more - Richard
Petty and Dale
Earnhardt - both with seven titles.
In 2004,
Gordon added to his growing list of accolades by becoming the
only NASCAR driver with four Brickyard
400 victories. In 2005, he took home the Daytona
500 trophy for the third time.
Off the track,
Jeff Gordon was the subject of tabloid headlines in 2002 for a
much-reported divorce from his wife of seven years, Brooke
Sealy. Gordon's most recent romantic interest is girlfriend
Ingrid
Vandebosch to whom he became engaged in 2006.
The wedding
announcement was made the same weekend he ended a months-long
losing streak in 2006 by winning the Dodge/Save Mart 350 in June.
In November,
Gordon and Vandebosch finally tied
the knot in a private wedding ceremony in Mexico. The couple
later announced the birth of their first child, a baby girl named
Ella Sofia Gordon.
In 2007, the
racing champ grabbed an historic victory at Phoenix International
Raceway in April when he tied racing great Dale Earnhardt's record
76 wins.
