Most recently in the news for taking the 2007 Nextel Cup series championship, the win marked the second consecutive time that the race car star came in first in the NASCAR standings.

Hollywood handsome, level-headed and articulate, Johnson was born Jimmie Kenneth Johnson on September 17, 1975 in El Cajon, California near San Diego, beginning his career as a Southern California kid riding motorcyles.

One of the sports top drivers in his #48 Lowe's Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS and Chevrolet Impala SS owned by friend and teammate Jeff Gordon, Johnson is also one of the most consistently winning drivers on the circuit.

In 2006, he made driving history as the only driver to win the Daytona 500, Allstate 400, Aaron's 499 and the NEXTEL Cup Championship all in the same year.

Johnson began his career at the ripe old age of five, driving 50cc motorcycles, and later graduated to the 60cc class championship. From there, he switched to the off-road four wheel leagues including SODA, SCORE International, and Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group, ultimately receiving Rookie of the Year awards in all three.

By 1998 Johnson made a brief foray in the Busch Series and in 2000 made his full-time series debut, finishing an impressive 10th overall in the points standings. Two year later, he moved up to the NEXTEL Cup Series and each year since has been consistently near or at the top of the point standings, and became the only driver ever to win the Coca-Cola 600 three years running (in 2003, 2004 and 2005).

Off the track, Jimmie hosts a weekly radio show, Not What You Expected, on XM Satellite Radio.

In 2004, he married girlfriend and professional model, Chandra Janway who manages the Jimmie Johnson Foundation helping to raise money for several national recognized charities.

The couple now live in Mooresville, North Carolina, although Johnson still maintains strong ties to San Diego, whose mayor recently proclaimed January 31, 2007 as Jimmie Johnson Day.
