Johnny Weir
Born
John Weir on July 2, 1984 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania the babyfaced
athlete with the big fan following ("Johnny's Angels")
is most noted for capturing the U.S. national champion in men's
figure skating that led to his last appearance at the Winter
Olympics in Torino, Italy.
Although
he only took to the ice at a relatively late age (he was 12) Weir
proved himself a skating prodigy when he quickly mastered the
double Axel.
By
13, he had already landed his first triple jump, a Salchow.
By
age 16, he was a junior world champion, and steadily progressed
up the ranks of U.S. figure skating to take the national men's
title in 2004.
A
few months later, he placed fifth at the World Championships and
rose to fourth position in world rankings in 2005, and again took
the U.S.national.
Then,
early in 2006, despite finishing third in the free skate, Johnny
Weir took his third
national title to automatically qualify for a berth at the
Winter Olympics.
Although
hopes were high for gold, Weir failed to medal. He later finished
fifth overall at the 2008 U.S. championships. In 2010, he qualified for his final Olympic appearance in
2010 at Vancouver and finished sixth overall.
Meanwhile,
Weir also took the cable television spotlight when he premiered in
an eight-part documentary, BE
GOOD JOHNNY WEIR, on the Sundance Channel that began January
18, 2010.
