Hewitt
Born
February 24, 1981 in Adelaide, South Australia, Hewitt is winner
of the 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon men's singles titles. In
stunning upset, he lost on his own home turf to Russian champ
Marat
Safin
at the Australian
Open
in 2005.
Growing
up in a sports-minded household with father, Australian rules
footballer, Glynn Hewitt, he took the tennis world by storm at
an early age showing his now signature fierce competitiveness
by becoming the youngest winner of an Association of Tennis Professionals
(ATP) tournament when he won the 1998 Adelaide Invitational. From
there he battled his way up the world rankings and won his first
Grand Slam tournament at the U.S. Open in 2001, and followed up
the next year with a Wimbledon win in 2002.
In 2004,
howeer, he became the tennis player who lost in each Grand Slam
to the eventual champion - suffering his first defeat to Roger
Federer In the Australian Open; to Argentine Gastón
Gaudio in French Open; and to Roger Federer again at Wimbledon
and at the U.S. Open.
Off the court,
Hewitt has been romantically linked to Belgian tennis player Kim
Clijsters, but following his loss at the 2005 Australian
Open reportedly asked then-current girlfriend, actress Bec
Cartwright, to tie the knot.
The
couple were later married in a celebrity 'love match' in July
at the Sydney Opera House.
Most
recently, the couple celebrated with a baby
announcement when Bec Cartwright gave birth to their first
child, a daughter, in late November 2005.
