Marat Safin
Born in Moscow,
Russia on January 27, 1980, Marat Mikhailovich Safin began playing
tennis as a youngster and eventually turned pro in 1997.
Three
years later, Safin claimed his first Grand Slam victory at the
U.S. Open and reached the Australian Open finals in both 2002
and 2004 the intervening year being marked by injuries that slowed
his progress.
Meanwhile,
Safin has also won five ATP Tennis Masters titles, his first in
2000 and three more following in Paris in 2000, 2002 and 2004.
His last Masters victory was in Madrid, Spain in 2004.
Safin
reached the finals at the Australian
Open in 2005 against Australia's Lleyton
Hewitt and handily beat the home favorite 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Safina (born April 27th, 1986) is also a professional tennis
player.
