Toronto Blue JaysThe Toronto Blue Jays only came into existence in 1976.

On August 12, 1976 directors selected "Blue Jays" from over 4,000 names and 30,000 entries in a "Name the Team" contest. Since then, five American League East division titles have belonged to the Blue Jays.

The team has only won two World Series Championships, but they were momentous. 1992 became the year a Canadian team won an American Championship game, and in 1993 Joe Carter hit the winning home run in the bottom of the ninth innning that took the team from losing to winning.

Eventually, Toronto also became the first Major League club ever to draw over 4 million fans in one season. In 1989, the Jays' new retractable-roofed home, SkyDome opened. It boasts the largest video display board in North America, second only to Japan for largest in the world! The venue was renamed the Rogers Centre on February 2, 2005.

Among the team's roster of players, Dave Stieb arguably retains the title of Most Popular among a legion of Blue Jays fans. He was in seven All-Star games, also a Blue Jays team record.

In 2006 , John Gibbons became the first official member of the Blue Jays to be selected to be an assistant coach for the All-Star Game. Troy Glaus, Vernon Wells, Roy Halladay, B.J. Ryan, and Alex Rios (unable to play due to injury, replaced) were also picked to go to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. This was the most all stars from one team selected for the game since 1993.
