South Africa, granted an automatic berth in the 2010 World Cup, kicked off the 19th edition of the games beginning June 11 leading up to the exciting July 11, 2010 final won by victorious Spain over their fierce Dutch rivals.

It was the first time that the tournament was held in Africa, with millions of visitors making their first ever trip to Johannesburg for the occasion.

2010 World Cup Tickets

Fans had been lining up at ticket counters and online worldwide to apply for the 1 million tickets that went on sale following the World Cup 2010 final draw and schedule announced on December 4, 2009.

To get tickets, applications must have been made by January 22, 2010, with various country associations taking part in World Cup tickets distribution. World Cup tickets to the hottest matches (the USA - England game, for example) were by tradition distributed by lottery due to the overwhelming demand.

World Cup ticket prices ranged from a low of $19 for group games on sale in South Africa to a high of "anything goes" internationally on the black market by unscrupulous agents and scalpers. In addition, an official FIFA.com ticket advisory also warned feverish fans to be on the lookout for unscrupulous internet sales — offering likely bogus or non-existent tickets.

The 2010 World Cup TV Schedule

Live Coverage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was broadcast live in the UK on both BBC and ITV.

In Canada, soccer fans tuned into CBC for complete coverage. In the U.S., the World Cup wascovered in its entirety by ABC Sports & ESPN, totaling more than 65 hours of programming including a nightly 30-minute World Cup Live show airing on ESPN or ESPN2.

A viewership totaling 25 million households also watched on ESPN Star Sports on the Indian Subcontinent, while rabid Australian and New Zealand footy fans were glued to SBS all month long.
