Spike Video Game AwardsThe excitement began in mid-November, when Spike announced its full official list of 2013 video game awards nominees.

Weeks later, the Spike VGX Video Game Awards -- "the Oscars of video games" -- aired on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 6PM ET with live streaming available on the Spike web site, Comedy Central Online, MTV.com and MTV2.com.

New this year? A change in name and focus-- as the VGA's become "VGX" with the spotlight on on next generation games, interviews with game developers, and extended demos of PlayStation and Xbox One titles.

This year's co-hosts were Spike TV's own Geoff Keighly and "The Soup" funnyman Joel McHale! As always, fans were treated to the usual calvacade of upcoming video game trailers -- including Game of Thrones, No Man's Sky, The Destiny, Quantum Break, Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Titanfall, winner of Most Anticipated Game.

Other big winners included Grand Theft Auto 5 for Video Game of the Year and Best Soundtrack, and Gone Home for both Best Independent Game and Best PC Game.

This year, games released between December 2012 and November 2013 are eligible to be nominated.

Besides honoring a current crop of video game successes, fans usually get a sneak peak at world premieres of upcoming titles as well as live appearances by mega-star presenters. In the past, those have included heavyweight names such as as Hugh Jackman, Charlize Theron, Tiger Woods, Dwayne Johnson, Stevie Wonder, Neil Patrick Harris, Jake Gyllenhaal, and dozens of others.
