Minnesota
Acquired
in part from the British after the American Revolution, and from
France in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the boundaries of Minnesota
in its present form were complete when Britain finally ceded the
northern tip bordering Canada in 1818.
Today, "the
land of a thousand lakes" offers inhabitants and visitors numberless opportunities
for boating, fishing, swimming and other water sports - while big metropolitan
centers provide top cultural attractions such as the Walker
Art Center in Minneapolis. Other
major attractions include the Minnesota
Zoological Gardens in Apple Valley about 20 miles south of the Twin Cities;
Voyageurs National Park in International
Falls; and the scenic 24-mile North Shore Drive stretching along Lake Superior's
shore from downtown Duluth to Two Harbors, Minnesota. Another
Minnesota must-see near Minneapolis is Mall
of America, the nation's largest shopping center comprising acres of shops
and indoor theme park rides.
