Africa has a tradition of wine growing dating back to French and Dutch colonization.
Especially in the South African wine region, vineyards line the coast mainly along the Western cape, wine is a booming industry receiving international awards for excellence.
In Northern Africa, the Maghreb wine region encompasses Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. Here, the tradition of winemaking reaches back even further to the Romans -- who first found the warm, Mediterrean climate a perfect spot to plant Africa's first vineyards.
Meanwhile, let's not forget Madagascar, the island situated off Africa's East coast where good, basic table wines are produced in vineyards located on steep-terraced slopes, (interplanted with pineapples and bananas!) that results in a wine touring experience like no other.
Elsewhere on the continent, Cape Verde with its roots in Portuguese colonization boasts another thriving wine producing region on the island of Cha das Caldeira off the West coast.
Most recently, even Kenya has taken up the challenge of transforming the Rift Valley into a wine grape haven with the opening its first commercial winery there.
