While
Baja wineries may have the eye of the international wine critics, half
of Mexico’s vineyards are in Sonora, despite the arid desert weather conditions where heavy irrigation is a must.
Many
of the grapes are table grapes or are used for raisins or brandy production. Much of the wine grape production, on the other hand, is shipped to Baja
or north to wineries in Arizona,
and as a result only local boutique wineries remain as the region's
big draw for wine tourism.
The
two main wine grape growing regions in Sonora are Hermosillo and
Caborca, where wine grapes such as Barbera, Cardinal, and Palomino
