Alabama Taxes
Alabama levies a 2, 4, or 5 percent personal income tax, depending upon the amount earned and filing status. Taxpayers are not allowed to deduct their federal income tax from their Alabama state tax, but can deduct federal Social Security and Medicare taxes.
Residents must complete and mail in returns using Form 40 by the taxpaying deadline. When that date falls on a weekend or holiday, tax filers get until the next business day to submit their state returns.
NOTE: This year, the IRS tax filing deadline has been extended to Tuesday, April 18, 2023 due to the observance of Emancipation Day in Washington, DC. Since the holiday falls on a Sunday, it will be observed the following Monday pushing the federal IRS deadline to Tuesday and thus giving taxpayers three extra days to file.
