Unlike the Oscars or the Golden Globes - in which nominees and winners are selected by industry peers - the People's Choice Awards are determined solely by the viewing public.

This year nods went to the enduring heroes and sweethearts of the silver screen including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Will Smith, and dozens more.

Fans by the millions went online to vote at pcavote.com to personally pick their favorites.

The PCA's began this year's buzz over the possibility of posthumous Oscar honors for Heath Ledger, who was up for several People's Choice awards this year for his gripping performance in the The Dark Knight.

Nominees were announced on November 10, 2008, which was followed by a star-studded awards ceremony televised on CBS on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. Queen Latifah returned as host with a special live performance by country music superstar Carrie Underwood.
