MAIN Arrow to Art & Culture Art & ... Arrow to Hollywood Pop Culture Arrow to Razzie Awards 2012 Razzie Awards

First in worst: Jack and Jill

One of the least anticipated awards shows in Hollywood, (especially by those who've been nominated) the Razzie Awards have been dishonoring the very worst to come out of Hollywood since 1980.

This year, nominees will be announced on Oscar eve, on February 25, 2012. The official awards ceremony honoring the worst in film will be held thereafter —appropriately enough — on April Fools Day on Saturday evening, April 1, 2012.

According to the official Razzie Awards web site, nominees are determined by more than 725 film professionals, film journalists and film fans from around the U.S. and 15 foreign countries.

Razzie nominee contenders - the Worst Movies of 2011

Comedian Adam Sandler suffered a smackdown of historic proportions this year for 'Jack and Jill' - a film comedy that was rated a 4-star stinker by critics - and featuring the ironic tagline, "His twin sister is coming for the holidays...and it ain't pretty" ....and so it wasn't.

Of course, there was no shortage of other bona-fide move disasters throughout 2011.

Who could forget 'Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star'? Variously described as a "train wreck" and "soul-crushing", it garnered a total 0% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Another overly-hyped major motion picture which arrived in theaters DOA this summer was 'Sucker Punch' (which left millions of viewers feeling like suckers for having sat through it.)

Finally, the Razzie's might have to come with a new category (Worst Clones) for this year's twin plots in 'No Strings Attached'", closely followed by 'Friends with Benefits'. BOTH movies starred cuter than cute leads playing shallow characters who only wanted a physical relationship but who — awwwww — ultimately fell in love by the closing credits. Hey! We didn't see that coming!

If you haven't see them (and especially if you have) you may want to know that more singularly terrible contenders likely to gain Razzie notice this year include Red Riding Hood, Your Highness, Green Lantern, I Don't Know How She Does It, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Soul Surfer, - plus another Adam Sandler entry - Just Go With It.
