Indiana Sharing
a similar early history to its eastern neighbor, Illinois,
the Indiana territory was first explored and settled by the French, then controlled
by Great Britain following its victory in the French and Indian Wars.
A
decade later, George Rogers Clark led American forces to expel the British in
a spectacular campaign during the Revolutionary War. Meanwhile,
local Indian harassment of frontier settlements continued until the victory of
Genenral William Henry Harrison at The
Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. With the region now secured, an influx of settlers
streamed into the Indiana territory.
Named the
state capital in 1824, Indianapolis today is a prime tourist draw
and major center for sporting events. Besides being home of the
Indiana Pacers
and the Indianapolis Colts,
the city is also host to the Indy
500 in May and the Allstate
"Brickyard" 400 in August at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway.
Other Indiana travel attractions include the Indiana
Dunes National Lakeshore, Lincoln
Boyhood National Memorial, and the George
Rogers Clark National Historical Park. Related
