While
most states with warm climates plant the muscadine in their vineyards
and see it flourish, West Virginia's climate is too cool for the
native Southern grape.
Instead, varieties
of mostly French-American hybrids, as well as the Concord, Niagara
and Delaware grape have shown promise throughout West Virginia,
where wineries may also specialize in fruit and dessert wines.
Today, almost a dozen West Virginia wineries are located throughout the state along the Shenandoah Valley wine trail, the Kanawha River Valley and the Ohio River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) which it shares with parts of Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.
