euro 2008Italy and France, the two main attractions at the 2006 World Cup, were among the teams that secured a place at the Euro 2008 finals, followed by the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Portugal and Spain. Rounding out the qualifying teams were The Czech Republic, Russia, Romania, Croatia Germany, Greece and Sweden.

Automatic qualification for the two host countries, Austria and Switzerland, left only the final fixtures to be decided at the final draw, announced December 2.

Euro 2008

In 2008, the championship played out in Switzerland (at venues in Berne, Basel, Geneva and Zurich) and in Austria (Salzburg, Vienna and Klagenfurt).

The first match kicked off on June 7, 2008 on the way to the quarter-finals leading to more intense semi-final battles, then on to the deciding game at Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna on Sunday, June 29, 2008 won by Spain against Germany in the final.

In the UK, BBC & ITV provided full coverage of championship matches along with RTE in Ireland.

Elsewhere around the world, fans watched TF1 and M6 in France, ERT in Greece, NOS in the Netherlands, PCCW in Hong Kong, and Al Jazeera in the Middle East & North Africa.

In Canada, TSN and RSD (French) shared broadcasting rights.

US fans tuned into ESPN for all 31 championship matches airing live in the U.S. with 2 major matches broadcast on ABC Sports. Setanta Sports USA also provided complete Pay-Per-View closed-circuit TV coverage widely available at local neighborhood pubs nationwide.

In Australia, SBS broadcast eight of the live Euro 2008 matches, including the opening game and the final, along with daily highlights and a "Road to Euro" preview series.

ESPN India provided television coverage in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives.
