The Nascar season, based on an intricate point system, consists of 36 races held throughout the year.
Changes to the 2012 schedule include the season-opening Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway starting one week later with the running of the preseason Shootout at Daytona on Feb. 18.
The 54th annual Daytona 500 kicks off the official season this year on February 26. Other changes of note include Talladega Superspeedway's Chase event moving up two weeks to October 7, 2012 becoming the fourth race in the Chase.
The Chase really begins as the year winds down - scheduled from September to November - comprising the last and final top 10 races with all the excitement of a major league playoff.
