DID YOU KNOW? MTV EMA fun facts
Miley Cyrus lights up at the EMAs in 2013. |
• Record holders for most career EMA wins include Justin Bieber with 22, followed by Eminem with 15, and Lady Gaga with 10.
• Metallica caused a backstage uproar at the 1996 EMAs when they performed the songs "So What?" instead of their scheduled single, "King Nothing". The expletive-laden "So What?" was heard unedited during the live telecast, but was deleted in all later rebroadcasts.
• The most dazzling entrance ever at the EMAs happened during the show in 2000, when Jennifer Lopez entered the stage from the ceiling in a specially built plane to perform "Love Don't Cost a Thing".
• Despite winning the award for Best Hip-Hop at the 2006 awards, Kanye West was so disappointed at not winning for Best Video that he crashed the stage in protest. A tirade quickly followed in which Kanye said he should have won the prize for his video "Touch the Sky" because it "cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it. I was jumping across canyons!"
• More controversy erupted at the 2013 EMAs when Miley Cyrus appeared to light up a joint on stage after accepting the Best Video Award for "Wrecking Ball".
• Although a truly international event, the UK has hosted the MTV EMAs a record seven times beginning in London in 1996, followed by Edinburgh (2003), Liverpool (2008), Belfast (2011), Glasgow (2014), and London (in 2017 and again in 2019).
