The first Orange Bowl was played in 1935 between Manhattan College and the University of Miami. To save money, Manhattan College cruised from New York to Miami by boat taking three days to reach the match. Miami won, 7-0.

The first Orange Bowl ever televised was broadcast before a national audience in January, 1953 when Alabama trounced Syracuse 61-6.
The first Orange Bowl night game ever occurred on January 1, 1965 when Texas upset top-ranked Alabama 21-17. A young Alabama quarterback named Joe Namath played despite a knee injury, but was nevertheless named the game's Most Valuable Player after battling to complete 18 of 37 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns.
After four fumbles and an interception, Nebraska recovered from a 17-7 deficit to an improbable 21-20 victory over Louisiana State in 1983 in one of the Orange Bowl's most historic squeakers.
