What's
up in 2012?
On
the Chinese calendar, it's the Year of the Dragon with the spotlight firmly placed on the dynamic ambition and energy of the mythical beast.
Hopefully, the dragon bodes well for social good in the year ahead, with dynamic leadership that will lend itself to easing the planet's current economic woes.
And, as 2012 is a leap year, there's an extra day in February to get it all done!
In summer, the spotlight turns to London, as the city erupts in celebration at the Queen's Jubilee marking Queen Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne. A few weeks later, also watch for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics to take place on July 27.
Elsewhere, national pride is on the line for Poland and Ukraine as they host the Euro 2012 championship games kicking off June 8. Also in the world of sport, this year marks the return of the 2012 Ryder Cup - the biennial battle between US and European golf champs teaming up to meet at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois in September.
The 'bad luck' news? Make way for black cats crossing your path in 2012 during a triple occurence of Friday the 13th falling on Friday, January 13; Friday, April 13; and Friday, July 13.
More notably, December 21, 2012 marks the end of the world — at least according to some interpretations of the ancient Mayan calendar. Otherwise, the optimists among us claim that December 21 will not be the end, but will rather mark the beginning of a new spiritual age with more emphasis on following the golden rule: "do unto others...".
Meanwhile, stay up-to-date with other reminders on major celestial events, sports tournaments, civic and religious holidays, film & entertainment awards shows, along with anticipated concert lineups at US state fairs and music festivals throughout the year ....
